Poster Competition

Topic

Favourite fruit and/or vegetable

People in Jamaica eat Akee. Durian is native to Malaysia and Indonesia. Do you know these fruit? Have you heard of turnips and Kohlrabi? What are your favourite fruit and/or vegetable? Is tomato a fruit or vegetable? What are the differences between fruits and veggies?

Sustainable future and local produce

Tropical fruits and vegetables are widely available in Australia. Most tropical fruits and vegetables tend to be delicate, therefore taste best when picked ripe and consumed shortly thereafter. However, they are picked “green” and forced to ripe in transit, and/or in specially designed warehouses. Beside their interesting look, their taste and texture represent only a shadow of their true taste. The best fruit and veggies are from your local area when they are fresh and taste natural. Moreover, by buying locally we help our economy and environment.

You are what you eat

Have you heard of Hippocrates (460-370BC) who believed the human body had an innate capacity for self-healing? It is he who said, “First, do not harm. Let thy food be thy medicine and the medicine be thy food”. It’s not a secret that the better you eat (more fruits and veggies) the better you look and feel. Your skin becomes smoother and healthier. You feel healthy and strong. Remember to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables every day.

Presentation

The 50 top posters will be laminated and displayed in both locations:

- for a month in Bliss Organic Garden Café (7 Compton St, opposite the Central Markets) – 19 April – 16 May 2009

- Central Markets - June - July 2009

- at the Sustainability Expo – May 2009

The top winning students will be presented with their prizes at the Awards Ceremony at the Fruit n Veg Parade on Saturday 18 April 2009 in Victoria Square. The Ceremony will take place on the main stage after the street march. All students, teachers and parents are invited to the Parade. Senior students are also encouraged to make costumes to take part in the street march at the Parade and try their luck in the Costume Contest.

We aim to have celebrities present the prizes. We also aim to get some media coverage of the presentation and the exhibition.

The presentation and exhibition will be recorded and CDs prepared. The winning posters will be recorded with voiceover explaining artists’ work. Schools with posters in the exhibition will be sent a CD to hopefully expose the exhibition to a wider audience.

Follow up

The 50 posters will be stored in an art folder and made available to school libraries or other interested parties for display.
